  1. PSA-2

    It could be a shorted output. It also could be that one of the driver stages, ahead of the output has shorted. In that case, the output is only doing what the previous stage tells it to do. Sometimes the problem will turn out to be several stages back.
  2. D 150A II drivers

    Thanks Karlos, I had already figured that out, found the specs and cross referenced to find that I could use a piar of 2N3441s, that I had, by the time I saw your post. Only after I had them in, found I still had DC and checked the 3585s out of circuit did I find the 2N4125 upstream of the drivers was shorted. Crown still stocks them @ 55 cents ea.
  3. D 150A II drivers

    I have a shorted Motorola D-3295-9 driver in my D 150A II. These are obsolete and Crown is out of them. I tried to find specs, but came up empty handed. Does anyone know anything about them that might help find a good replacement? Each one drives a single 2N3773, unlike the 300, where one driver drives four outputs (different driver).
  4. DC 300A rebuild

    I haven't been looking. Maybe I should pay some attention to that, as 2 out 3 of my 300s are caved in. They look ugly, but seem to happily go about their business, anyway. I could take them off and knock the dents out, but it's just too much trouble if I don't need them off for something anyway. I once kept them all in a steel rack, but after my drummer sold his Suburban, there was no room for the rack. Now, I use boxes built from 1 x 12 pine, with interlocking corners and 2 1/2 inch slots top and bottom for venting and across the top of both sides for handles. They have 1/4 inch jacks mounted on the the back with one inch angle aluminum for the speaker outs. I may add speaker fuses to the angle brackets, as well. By the way, mine work most weekends in my PA. This makes them much easier to handle and saves denting up anything else.

    I can use the curve tracer at work to get, more or less, equal gain on each half. Apparently it isn't all that critical, given that this unit worked for years with different transitor types mixed together and never sounded any less than Crown clean. Hello out there. Are Karlos and I the only ones to think of this? I think the supply of 3773s is running out faster than the interest in old Crown D series amps.

    Thanks for the reply Karlos. I saw the box, but I think it refers to fine tuning for the 3537 or 3541. When you used the 15024s, did you change anything else? Could you tell any difference after the change?

    More back ground. this is an early 300A, with the shiny front and gray, rather than black stripe with gold lettering. S/N 7716, main board 48554, that uses the 739 op amp. Tonight I harvested a pair of good 2N 3773s and found some of the 2N3523s open.

    My oldest DC 300A has been dead so long, I have forgotten what it's issues were. I did look to see which output devices it has and was surprised to find a mix of 2N3523 and 2N3773 I knew the later ones had the 2N3773s, but the earlier ones were listed as either 2N3937 or 2N3941. In order to bypass the hassle of finding long out of production parts and aid long term reliability, I'd like to use MJ15024s. So, what changes do I need to plan on to make them happy. Do I need new drivers, such as MJ15034s? I am looking for some degree of overkill, but mostly current production parts. The good news is that I was needing a pair of 2N3773s for my D 150A II, with dead outputs on one channel and good 3773s on the other.

    Yeah, I'd start with the fuse. After that, the only moving part is the switch, so it may have worn out. If you are somewhat technical and have a meter, you could follow the AC power from the power cord, to the switch, out the switch when it is on, to the primary of the power transformer, out of the secondary of the PT to the recitfier, then look for DC coming out of the recitfier. As always, with anything electrical, be careful! If that doesn't turn up a bad switch, frayed wire or loose connection, then it's tech time.

    Try some contact cleaner on all the plugs and jacks involved. There might be some corrosion, if that Crown has spent alot of time just sitting on a shelf. The filter caps on those are pretty large and take time to drain down. I first noticed that when I turned off my DC 300A powered PA for break and turned to my guitarist to commment on a busty waitress. Geez, I didn't REALLY want everyone in the bar to hear that!

    It sounds like it could be a nice combination, if you can get it connected. If you don't want to bother, I seem to be running a home for retired DC 300As.

    Imagine, after all these years, it still gets press coverage! That's amazing! For me, the old 300 isn't just a legend,it's a living legend. I'll be taking one of my 3 DC 300As with me tonight when I head out to play a gig with my band. Another thanks to Crown for a job well done!

    I think your best bet would be to find a dead 300 on Ebay. It may be way easier to find a live one and keep yours as a parts donor.
  14. Little or no bass

    Get a graphic equalizer. That will let you boost the lows and the signal level at the same time. This sounds like a place for the classic "smiley face" EQ.

    Good points. I was looking at the transformers being indifferent to freq and impedence. Once you are already lugging a 300 or two around, you've obviously stopped worrying about weight.
