What is the proper way to mic a set of Congas (inside the drums or from above - or both?) - and what kind of mic/mics should I use?

Reply: A popular way to mic the congas is with a single cardioid mic above and between them, a few inches to one foot away. The mic should have a good low-frequency response and a presence peak to bring out the attack of the drums. If you have enough inputs and mics, you might prefer to put one mic on each drum. The sound is a little louder and bassier that way. If the mics are inside the drums, they pick up mostly tone and not much attack.
