What are some effective ways to mike an upright bass (standup bass, double bass, bass viol, doghouse bass, acoustic bass)?
Suggestions for recording an overdub:
* GLM-100, CM-700 or CM-200A about 4 inches under the bridge, 3 inches away, aiming at the bridge. This gives a full, close-up sound.
* CM-700 about 1 foot from the bridge. Raise the mic for more plucking sound, lower it for more deep bass sound.
* GLM-100 wedged into an opening in the bridge (if it will fit). See drawing below. This technique gives a tight, focused sound. Suggested EQ: Narrow-Q boost at 40 Hz.
Suggestions for PA, or for recording to reduce leakage from other instruments::
* CM-200A or CM-700 3 inches from the narrow part of the G-string f-hole (right at the top edge of the sound hole).
* GLM-100 wedged into an opening in the bridge (if it will fit). See drawing below. This technique gives a tight, focused sound. It provides good isolation and gain-before-feedback. Suggested EQ: Narrow-Q boost at 40 Hz.
